Wolfram Van Mechelen

Wolfram Van Mechelen (1995, Leuven) began playing the violin at the age of six. In 2005, he was admitted to the conservatory of Avignon (FR), where he graduated with great distinction after five years of study. He then continued his musical studies at the Hogeschool voor de Kunsten of the Lemmensinstituut in Leuven with Lei Wang as his violin teacher, earning his degree with the highest distinction. Wolfram later studied at the Royal Conservatory of Antwerp with Professor Tatiana Samouil. In 2018, he received his master’s degree with great distinction.

Wolfram attended masterclasses with maestros such as Gunther Pichler, Gilles Millet, Mathieu Herzog, Marie Chilemme, Pavel Vernikov, Barnabàs Kelemen, Sergey Ostrovsky, Eric Schumann, Jan Talich, Frantisek Soucek, and Guido De Neve. He is primarily active in chamber music, as a co-founder of the Dimlicht ensemble and as the primarius of the Desguin Quartet.

With the Desguin Kwartet, he was a laureate and audience winner of the Supernova Classics Competition in 2020, and shortly after, he was invited to join the Italian Le Dimore Del Quartetto network. In 2022, he received the Fuga Trophy from the Union of Belgian Composers. The Desguin Kwartet is a highly regarded guest at various prestigious events. They have been invited to the Klarafestival, Festival Odegand, Festival van Vlaanderen, Wilde Westen Kortrijk, Festival de Quatuors à Cordes du Lubéron, Leuven Jazz, Jazz Middelheim, Bal Blomet, Iedereen Klassiek, Arte Amanti Chamber Music Festival, Musik Collagen Darmstadt, and many others.

Wolfram plays on a violin made by Émile Laurent (1854-1914), in collaboration with his son Albert Laurent, and loaned by the Strings For Talent fund and the King Baudouin Foundation, in memory of Leon and George Meersman.
