September 2021: João Pedro Gonçalves receives the Maestro Silva Pereira Prize – Young Musician of the Year 2020/21 in addition to the first prize in the cello category.

Cellist João Pedro Gonçalves has been named winner of the Maestro Silva Pereira – Young Musician of the Year 2020/21 Award, by RTP/Antena 2.

The festival is partnered by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, which will host the six concerts of the final phase of the prize, performed by the winners of the different categories, from which the Young Musician of the Year has been chosen.

At the winners’ concert, each of the six soloists performed with the Gulbenkian Orchestra.

This year’s winners are Vasco Teixeira (bassoon), Diogo Pinheiro (oboe), Regina Maria Freire (voice), Diogo João (classical guitar) and Maria Lourenço Pinheiro (horn), in addition to João Pedro Gonçalves.

As the winner, João Pedro Gonçalves performed Edward Elgar’s Cello Concerto in E minor, op.85, in its entirety, the work with which he competed, accompanied by the Gulbenkian Orchestra, at the festival’s closing gala concert, which took place on 1 October at the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation in Lisbon, under the direction of conductor José Eduardo Gomes.
